Writing and Learning

One goal of teaching any subject is to help students communicate through writing. Writing is an effective tool for learning (writing to learn) and a means for evaluating learning (writing to earn).  Faculty in any discipline can work with students and their writing, to help students develop fluency through practice and to help students better integrate and demonstrate knowledge  OU's Model for Writing in the Classroom helps guide faculty in developing assignments that build writing fluency and move students to deeper understanding of course content.

Pii and The Writing Center want to help faculty create immersive writing experiences for students that improve learning in and across courses.  We also recognize the need to make these assignments managable for faculty.

The tools in this section are designed to help faculty create learning experiences that help students increase their understanding of course materials through writing processes.  As demonstrated through sample learning activities, incorporating writing in a course can be efficient and effective.  A one-minute paper can help faculty understand what students have learned in a particular session.  A carefully constructed one-page paper can help students learn to concisely communicate their learning in a form that is consistent with the type of writing typically done in a particular field of study or practice.  Adoc writingrubric can guide student writing and ease the evaluation process for faculty.  Student journals, student reflections on service learning experiences, research reports, literature reviews, academic essays are just some of the ways OU faculty can help develop OU graduates who are intentional learners prepared for work and life in the 21st Century.
