I hope you all had a great holiday break. I am looking forward to a great Spring 2008! This Spring, we are pleased to announce our Spring 2008 PII Workshop Series. The Dates, Topics and Times are listed below. We look forward to seeing you at one of the events.
Faculty Discussion Workshops – Spring 2008 Semester
1. Blended/Hybrid Courses (HC) Presenter: Kent Johnson Hybrid courses replace significant time in class with interactive web based learning activities. The models vary but typically will involve replacing about 1/3 of class time with online activities. These interactive sessions will guide faculty in designing a hybrid course.

2. Dealing with Difficult People (DDP) Presenter: Jane Bowerman Difficult people are everywhere (students, colleagues, administrators...) and they can be frustrating! Difficult people have complicated lives and they are hard to work with, however, we benefit when we can develop more effective ways to work with them.

3. Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) Presenter: Kent Johnson These interactive sessions will lead faculty in designing learning experiences that engage students in discovering new knowledge. Faculty will incorporate inquiry in course design using several strategies including: problem/project based learning, service learning, case-based learning, and undergraduate research. This workshop meets 5 times.

4. Open Discussion (OD) Presenter: Jane Bowerman This session meets 3 times and will be an open forum for sharing ideas, asking questions, and venting minor frustrations regarding teaching. Faculty, Instructors, and Teaching Assistants are welcome to bring concerns to this discussion for ‘new eyes’ or in this case ‘new ears’.

5. Portfolios as Student Assessment (PSA) Presenter: Jane Bowerman Students compile assignments and other documentation as evidence of their learning throughout your course. We will discuss how to design, direct, and assess student portfolios.

6. Writing Assignment Makeover Presenter: Michele Eodice, Director, Writing Center and Writing Across the Curriculum At our first meeting, we will develop new short writing assignments that help you assess content learning (bring your syllabus/textbook). We will also look at writing-to-learn activities for in-class writing. For our second meeting, bring examples of your typical writing assignments and we’ll discuss expectations, outcomes, and rubrics that strengthen the assignments and produce better written texts. And at our 3rd meeting, we will look at best practices in responding to and grading student writing projects. Choose the day that fits your schedule and plan to join us. Bring your lunch, the Writing Center will provide coffee and other beverages.

7. Web Based Research (WBR) Presenter: Jane Bowerman Students need guidance searching the World Wide Web for information. They need to determine what is fact, what is credible, and how to interpret what they find. They also need to know how to write about what they find. Sessions provide process support for students, guidelines for assignments, and assessment rubrics.
